The Suffolk County sheriff's department rolled out a new program yesterday that is sure to ease some of the fears of relatives of people who have Alzheimer's and dementia, as well as parents of children with autism or Down syndrome.
The program, Project Lifesaver, provides a tracking system for people who wander away and may be in danger but not know it. Project Lifesaver, founded in 1999 in Virginia, provides the service and equipment to more than 650 law enforcement agencies.
'This is really a partnership between law enforcement, families and caregivers of people who are afflicted with cognitive disorders,' said Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, who is also the downstate coordinator for the program. 'It's a great program.'
Clients registered in the program get a 1-ounce battery-operated transmitter bracelet that emits a personalized signal 24 hours a day.
Consider these pointers before buying that bracelet or earrings:
Know your karats. The price of gold varies with karat number (a unit of fineness), weight, design, finishing (by hand vs. machine) and country of origin. Pure gold, 24 karat, is too soft for jewelry, so it's mixed with other metals. Changes in gold's color result from the metal mix-in. Anything less than 10 karat, about 42 percent gold, can't legally be sold as gold
