Clayton died at the hospital about an hour after the Ford Windstar in which he was riding was struck by a Jeep Liberty on I-275 near Koppernick Road.
The boy had spent the weekend with a friend in the Detroit area and was heading back to Jackson County.
His friend, Andrew Aitken, was injured and has since recovered.
Since Clayton's death, Melissa Moore said, his school and sports teams have done much in his honor, which she considers a testament to the lives he touched.
He was a good student and athlete who played baseball and basketball and ran track, his family and school officials said.
During the summer, the middle school track team presented Melissa Moore with an engraved, white gold bracelet.
On the inside it reads 'Clayton running with the angels.' On the outside, it reads 'And too, I am with you always.'
His friends wear purple bracelets in his memory. Purple was his favorite color, his mother said.
Tate Vogt, 13, a Napoleon Middle School eighth- grader, wears two bracelets. He called his friend a good leader with a 'great sense of humor.' He is not easily forgotten, said Tate, one of about 1,200 who attended Clayton's funeral. 'There is always this feeling that he is not around.'
