By exposing the fact that McCains opposition to spending could not possibly have anything to do with wanting the government to save money, since he would be squandering more money by orders of magnitude on Republican cronies at the oil corporations, Obama did slightly more than label him a hypocrite. On the bright side of the first half of this ghastly production, at least McCain himself is no longer letting solely his personality and the black hole where campaign advisor Tucker Bounds is supposed to be act as the sole resource in the massive task of making the curmudgeonly old man remotely likable. Bounds et al seem to have taken McCain to the Mike Huckabee School of Political Frivolity, where he learned to behave like an average American by making light of such grandiose Republican farces as the Iraq War (I have a bracelet) and all of the American economy (I have a pen I will veto everything that requires money). All he needs is to finish his final project for Christian Fundamentalist Jokes class and hell be able to graduate with Huckabees seal of approval! And, of course, by graduate, I mean, win this election. Obama may be gaining in the polls and may be surrounded by intelligent, prepared people that have a deep comprehension of domestic and world issues while remaining rooted in the lives of average, middle-class Americans, but can his message (and skin color) possibly resonate with Middle America? If McCain cant even break the rough exteriors of this core demographic, there is little hope for our hopeful, basketball-playing friend. Post-debate, the combined forces of McCains pen, bracelet, and overuse of the word fundamental could only mean one thing for Americas most prestigious social class, the Pundits. McCain won the debate by a landslide! Many talking heads bent over backwards in their attempts to convince people that McCain had won and, in many ways, he had. His extensive experience in dealing with problematic world leaders and his obstinacy in the face of terrorists and rogue dictators far outshone his adversarys doe-eyed take on foreign policy. It is hard to believe that Barack Obama could hold his own at a table across from political sharks like Vladimir Putin and all the vultures circling the remains of Latin America. By reassuring America that he understood the consequences of letting deviant nations run amok in a nuclear world, McCain proved himself worthy of being on an international stage, and with a small reminder of his capability to be a candidate for this position at all, he far outstripped most expectations. Obama may have obliterated him in an objective analysis of the debate, but McCain performed such that he obliterated his own previous self, and in doing so swayed the minds of many fence-sitters that felt cornered into voting for Obama
