The 19-year-old was on house arrest after exiting a juvenile correctional facility, but his probation officer allowed him two exceptions. Desmaret could go to church or to boxing practice.
'The kids made fun of him because we would go outside and run and Fred had to run with the bracelet and detector box,' PAL coach Larry Willis said. 'He couldn't be 20 feet away from the box.'
Desmaret, a Fort Myers resident since he was 9, is thankful his probation officer allowed him to box because he feels the sport changed his life.

The event will involve the participation of 27 different establishments; among them are restaurants, bars and retail locations.
'We're hoping it will be a big boost for the businesses,' Sea Bright Mayor Maria Fernandes said. '[Even though] Sea Bright seems to be buzzing in September this year. I think it'll be really great for the businesses to let people see all the businesses we have.'
According to the Visit Sea Bright Web site, participants can purchase an admission bracelet in advance of the event that entitles participants to samplings of food, drinks, door prizes and giveaways.
